Pheasant Hunt with CQ Gamebirds
October 20, 2019 & November 2, 2019
On October 20th and November 2nd, Stephen McMaster of CQ Gamebirds hosted a youth pheasant hunt for some of the local shooting sports athletes at Irish Creek Outfitters. Eight athletes participated in the guided and educational hunt. Of those 8, 4 of the athletes had never been pheasant hunting and the others held some experience in pheasant hunting. These youth were part of the Maize South, Wellington, and Cowley County 4-Hshooting sports teams.
First Hunts are very controlled hunts that are designed to re-enforce lessons learned in hunter ed. This is not considered a “wild bird hunt” and that is perfect for a first time pheasant hunter. The day started with a review of upland hunting safety topics, reviewing material from their class. Birds are placed in the the field so that we have a very controlled “hunt” and the hunters can focus on their zone of fire and safe gun handling while walking the field.
One unique feature that was part of this event was the parent involvement at the hunt. Many of these hunters were accompanied by a parent. Some of who have some bird hunting experience and others who did not. We not only educate our youth on hunting, but they are instructed on how to clean their game and take it home. We also encourage the parents to get involved too! These dad’s did not hesitate to get their hands dirty during the hunt!
The Maize South High School Trap Team is coached by Will Moore. Will consistently goes above and beyond for his shooting athletes. Being a hunter himself, Will understands that it is crucial that we engage the shooting sports athletes in Kansas because they are the future of hunting. Not only do we get these kids out and hunting, but they also establish and cultivate a great friendship and confidence to go hunting again.
Special thanks to Stephen McMaster of CQ Gamebirds, Gary Parks, and Steve Westfahl of Irsish Creek Outfitters for hosting this pheasant hunt! We also want to thank the Ringneck Rustlers Pheasants Forever Chapter and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for their support of this event! These youth are ready for opening weekend!
